Understanding 3D Modelling

In this assessment, I am being asked to evidence my knowledge of 3D practices by submitting three or more basic prop models. These could be a bone or a Rubik’s cube, but they should demonstrate my understanding of low-poly modelling workflows using proper quad-based topology. For each prop model, I am required to:

1. Select suitable reference imagery of the real world object.

2. Produce a low poly model of the object using proper quad based topology.

3. Explain my production processes based on my understanding of fundamental modelling principles, including identifying the areas which were challenging and describing how I overcame them.

For reference, a CAD blueprint was utilised (Quandtum, 2009). Further examination, particularly through comparison with a physical model, revealed several inaccuracies. For example, the blueprints used for the arm failed to account for a subtle tapering effect towards the shoulder.

LEGO minifigure - Arm

Using the CAD blueprints as template image planes in Maya, the arms were constructed from a primitive cylinder and then refined through the use of extrusions and edge loops.

Upon further examination, particularly through comparison with a physical model, several inaccuracies became evident. The blueprints used for the arm did not account for a subtle tapering effect towards the shoulder.
